Sacramento - Today the Governor appointed Jodi Remke, 48, of Oakland as Chairperson of the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), California’s governmental ethics and campaign disclosure agency.
Remke has been the Presiding Judge for the California State Bar Court since November, 2006. The State Bar Court investigates complaints of attorney misconduct and California is the only state in the nation with independent professional judges dedicated to ruling on attorney discipline cases. Prior to her role as Presiding Judge, Remke served as a Hearing Judge for the State Bar Court.
“I am extremely pleased and honored to be appointed Chair of the FPPC. I thank the Governor for this opportunity to guide and shape discussion and actions to improve and encourage public trust in the process of government. I look forward to serving Californians as we move forward in promoting integrity, transparency and trust.”
Remke was admitted to the Bar in 1992 and has worked on legislation involving consumer protection, family law, juvenile dependency and real property, as well as efforts to overhaul the state’s child support system. The Senate Rules Committee appointed Remke to the State Bar Court as a Hearing Judge in 2000 and reappointed her in 2004. She was Supervising Judge of the State Bar Court Hearing Department in 2004 and 2005.
Remke previously served as counsel to the California Senate Judiciary Committee, practiced real estate law with the firm of Miller, Starr and Regalia in Oakland, and was a VISTA attorney in Montana representing clients in domestic violence cases and advocating on behalf of children with disabilities in a rural, underserved area.
“This is an important role and I take the responsibility seriously. I will continue to maintain our commitment to ensuring rules will be followed and making intelligent improvements in our work.”
Remke received her Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois and her Juris Doctorate from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Remke is a member of the California State Bar.
Remke replaces previous Chair Ann Ravel, who was appointed by President Obama to the Federal Elections Commission, where she is currently the Vice-Chair.
