FPPC names new Chief of Enforcement

The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) today announced the appointment of Angela Brereton as Chief of Enforcement.

Brereton has served as Assistant Chief of the Enforcement Division since January 2019. Before that, she spent nine years as Senior Commission Counsel in the Enforcement Division. She has prosecuted some of the most serious violations of the Political Reform Act, including laundered campaign contributions, conflicts of interests, and complex campaign disclosure cases. Angela has collaborated with local jurisdictions to prosecute cases which involve violations of both the Political Reform Act and local campaign laws. She also has provided training seminars on topics including conflicts of interests, Government Code section 84308 (conflicts of interests regarding campaign contributions), and contribution limits for state candidates and officeholders.

Miadich. “Angela’s knowledge of the law and her extensive work overseeing many of the most challenging cases demonstrates her commitment to promoting the public’s trust through tough but fair enforcement of serious violations. California is a national role model in regulation of government ethics and I’m confident Angela will reinforce that reputation.”

Prior to her position as Senior Commission Counsel, Angela served three years as Commission Counsel in the Enforcement Division. Before coming to the Commission, Angela was a civil litigator in private practice for six years. Angela received her law degree from the University of California, Davis, King Hall School of Law, and her undergraduate degree in Theatre from the University of California, San Diego.

Brereton assumes the role previously held by Galena West, who became Executive Director of the FPPC earlier this year after five years as Enforcement Chief.  

Angela will start on November 9, 2020.
